Ever wonder why there are always yoga classes in climbing gyms? It’s because the two go together like cake and ice cream. Yoga can elevate your climbing game to the next level. Here are 5 reasons to fit a consistent yoga practice into your schedule:

1. A regular yoga program will make the entire body much more supple and strong so that it can stretch and reach more deeply with greater endurance, and work at a more optimal level overall.

2. Prevent climbing injuries through the intense body conditioning that yoga offers. Over time, muscles, ligaments, and connective tissue becomes more pliable and can withstand bigger reaches and strength moves. Bones become denser through the weight-bearing postures and make falling safer. Joints become more stable through improved muscle strength.

3. Calm focus and body awareness become more refined and skillful from yoga. These tools come in especially handy when climbing in intense conditions that are likely to invoke primal fears. The best way to get through these situations safely is to fall back on the practice of focused, calm awareness. Total body awareness gained through a serious yoga practice is a game-changing ability.

4. Learn about bandhas through yoga, which are a very interesting tool that can be used to keep the body strong, functional and stable, especially in situations that call for great strength and balance.

5. Yogic breathing will take you beyond what you imagined possible. These relatively obscure techniques will help your body and mind work harmoniously together to help you achieve all your climbing goals.
