New Year, New Yoga Resolutions

2018 Has Brought a New Yoga Schedule & New Resolutions

Starting fresh is one of the best feelings in the world. We've decided to start fresh with a new 2018 yoga schedule at The Front. Come enjoy Mysore Astanga classes with Sarah Jane and Brian (pictured) or choose from a variety of other offerings such as Vinyasa, Integrated Yoga, Soft & Slow, and more!

As we embark on a new year, we resolve to improve our lives through healthy practices such as eating better and strengthening our bodies and minds. Let us make some simple and attainable resolutions so that we may approach the rest of our lives with calm, clarity, flow and ease; leading to better decision making and tasks executed more efficiently. This leads to us spending our time in a quality way that benefits ourselves and the rest of the world, both when we are working and in our free time. Yoga is a practice of self-awareness and inner evolution, growth, and balance.

Choose one or all of these resolutions to focus on, or make up your own, perhaps inspired by these ideas:

Resolution #1

Go to more yoga classes. Practicing at home is wonderful but it is very easy to get distracted and fall off course. Being in a class ensures that you will complete the asana portion of a personal yoga practice. Asana (doing the physical yoga postures) brings us bodily health and fitness so that we may accomplish more in our lives. We have a number of new classes available. Check out our new schedule!

Resolution #2

This one can be practiced anytime and anywhere (no need for a yoga mat)—practice yamas and niyamas. These are codes for yogis to live their lives by and will seem very familiar to us, as these are basic ethical codes humans all over the world have valued over the centuries. These codes could be considered necessary for a civil society. The yamas and niyamas are as follows:

Yama: Observances and behaviors which regulate how we behave to others

« Ahimsa: nonviolence
« Satya: truthfulness
« Asteya: non-stealing
« Brahmacharya: maintaining one's healthy boundaries
« Aparigraha: non-possessiveness

Niyama: Commitments to ourselves and daily principles to follow

« Sauca: cleanliness of self and surroundings
« Santosa: contentment
« Tapas: self-discipline
« Svadyaya: self-study
« Isvarapranidhana: surrender to the essence of creation and all that is

Resolution #3

Set aside some time each day or even a few times a week for quiet contemplation. Read a bit of a yoga book (we recommend the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali with translation and commentary by Sri Swami Satchidananda and also the Bhagavad Gita, translated by Stephen Mitchell. These classic books contain many insights into what yoga is, beyond pure physical exercise. Read just a bit and then sit quietly in a comfortable position, focus on your breathing, and reflect on the meaning of what you have read, and how it applies to you, and how you can benefit from this information. (This falls under the umbrella of Svadyaya, self-study, one of the niyamas listed above.)
